Massive Investments Needed To Scale Carbon Removal: AlliedOffsets Report

Even though global efforts to achieve net-zero emissions with carbon removal have been increasing, a newly published analysis from AlliedOffsets shows just how vast the challenge has become.

According to the AlliedOffsets report “Carbon Removal Market Outlook (October 2025)” report, meeting global climate goals will require removing between 5 and 22 gigatons of CO2 per year by 2050, a far larger range than many assumed.

The report draws on more than 60 academic studies and positions technical solutions such as biochar, biomass storage, enhanced rock weathering and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) as among the key pathways likely to deliver nearly half of all removals by mid-century.

AlliedOffsets estimates an average cost of roughly $160 per ton for these technologies under the assumption that deep emissions reductions proceed simultaneously.

Yet achieving this scale will require monumental investment. The report projects cumulative capital flows of $1.22 trillion in a lower-demand scenario, scaling up to $5.8 trillion if the high-removal pathway is pursued.

The outlook aligns with broader industry research. For example, McKinsey & Company predicts durable carbon-removal credit demand could reach up to 100 million metric tons by 2030, still only a small fraction of the multi-gigaton need by 2050.

Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency emphasizes that long-term demand certainty must come from new policy frameworks, including advance procurement commitments and stronger standard-setting, if removal-technologies are to scale.

Industry participants stress the urgency. Without clear regulatory signals, market demand remains muted and many removal pathways remain cost-intensive.
