Lloyd’s Register has granted its approval to Value Maritime for its carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology called the Filtree System.

The technology designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions is essentially a prefabricated gas cleaning system, capable of filtering 99% of particular matter.

Following the go-ahead from Lloyd’s Register, Value Maritime is set to equip two Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) MR Tankers with its proprietary Filtree System, which includes a carbon capture module that captures CO2 with the help of a chemical.

The captured carbon emissions, along with said chemical, will then be stored onboard in a large tank.

Once the tank is full, it can be emptied in a port and the carbon dioxide can be extracted to either be utilized or permanently stored away.

The Approval in Principle awarded by Lloyd’s Register is a significant milestone for onboard carbon capture and for making shipping more sustainable, in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) plan to reduce the sector’s emissions by half by 2050.

In a comment on the award, Maarten Lodewijks, Co-Founder & Director, Value Maritime, said: “Sustainable shipping is here today and it’s available for forward-thinking shipowners just like EPS. Thanks to LR’s Approval in Principle for our Carbon Capture and Storage System we can bring our filtering and carbon capture technology to the tanker market and beyond.”

Currently, Value Maritime’s carbon capture system can allow ships to slash their CO2 emissions by up to 40% with the potential of reaching 90% and beyond in time.
