Lithos Carbon has issued a landmark 5,160 registry-certified tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) achieved through enhanced rock weathering (ERW), marking the largest issuance recorded for this CO2 removal pathway to date.

According to Lithos, the volume of issued carbon credits is approximately sevenfold larger than any previous ERW carbon credit delivery, testifying to the company’s ability to deliver high-integrity CDR on a large scale.

Lithos Carbon specializes in a CDR approach that uses novel soil models and machine learning to maximize CO2 removal while improving local crop growth.

To track the achieved CDR, the company relies on rigorous scientific measurement and monitoring protocols that track the CO2 removal from the field application stage all the way to the thousand-year storage phase.

These science-rooted systems ensure that each ton of issued CDR represents genuine, additional, and durable removal of atmospheric CO2 emissions.

The milestone carbon credit issuance came from a U.S.-based project that involved a network of farmers from North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Michigan, who spread domestically sourced and nutrient-rich basalt rock dust to their fields, powering an ERW carbon removal process.

Besides generating CO2 removal results, these activities also delivered additional environmental and social benefits, contributing towards improved soil pH management, enhanced soil nutrient availability, and a reduced reliance on conventional soil amendment applications.

In turn, the farmers who participated in the ERW project unlocked financial savings in their everyday operations while tapping into a new income stream through carbon management practices.

Through this ERW project in the United States, Lithos Carbon has already created dozens of supply chain jobs, including positions related to quarry operations, application services, and scientific monitoring.

Going forward, the company intends to scale its ERW operations as an answer to the growing high-quality CDR demand, and this expansion is expected to result in the introduction of even more local job openings.

Mary Yap, CEO of Lithos Carbon, commented, “By working with American farmers and using locally sourced byproduct rocks, we’re not only removing carbon from the atmosphere but also strengthening farm economics and soil health across rural communities at a time when farm margins across the country are under real pressure.”
