Linde and Valmet have partnered to develop electrically driven carbon capture solutions for the pulp and paper industry, targeting emissions reductions in one of the world’s harder-to-abate industrial sectors.
The collaboration combines Linde’s carbon capture technology with Valmet’s expertise in pulp and paper mill integration. The system is designed to capture CO2 without relying on steam or other thermal energy sources, instead using renewable electricity to power the process.
Linde said the technology is particularly suited to mills with limited excess heat availability and growing electrification needs. The company’s adsorption-based capture technology is already used in industries such as cement production.
Tobias Keller, Executive Director for Adsorption & Membrane Plants at Linde Engineering, said electrification is becoming increasingly important for industrial decarbonisation and that carbon capture systems must adapt accordingly.
Industry targets lower-emissions production
The pulp and paper sector remains a major industrial emitter, producing nearly 90 million tonnes of CO2 annually in Europe and around 144 million tons per year across the US and Canada.
Although the European paper industry has cut emissions by roughly 50% since 2005, further decarbonisation remains challenging due to the sector’s energy demands and operational complexity.

Valmet said successful deployment of carbon capture in pulp and paper facilities requires close integration with existing mill operations and strong process expertise.
Linde’s carbon capture technology is already being deployed in several large-scale industrial projects globally, including ADNOC’s Hail and Ghasha gas project in the UAE and Cemex’sCO2LLECT cement plant project in Germany.
The latter is designed to capture and liquefy 1.3 million metric tons of CO2 annually.
