Italian ocean CO2 removal company Limenet announced that it has signed an agreement with leading registry Isometric, embarking on a collaboration that will enable Limenet’s debut on the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) market.
Through this partnership, Isometric will monitor Limenet’s CO2 removal operations, ensuring that the credits generated from these activities adhere to the highest science-based criteria for quality, transparency, and traceability.
This move also marks the beginning of a process that will validate Limenet’s compliance with CDR standards and ISO 14064-2.
Sharing the news, Limenet stated, “This milestone reinforces our commitment to transparency and quality in the CDR market, and we’re excited to continue this journey with Isometric.”
The Italian startup has been making significant strides in the European and global carbon dioxide removal landscape.
In just 18 months after its official launch, the company managed to construct and start operating one of the largest ocean carbon storage facilities in the world. The landmark facility serves as a station that converts CO2 to calcium bicarbonates, safely storing them in the ocean water.
Positioned in Augusta, Italy, this industrial facility has a maximum annual carbon storage capacity of 800 tons.
Limenet used this industrial infrastructure to demonstrate its innovative CDR technology through a partnership with Nippon Gases, who provided the first portion of biogenic CO2 sourced from their biogas upgrading plant.
By combining the biogenic CO2 with ocean water and lime provided by local quarry partner Leone La Ferla, Limenet’s technology successfully converted the carbon dioxide into calcium bicarbonates that will remain chemically stable in the water environment for millennia.
One of the outstanding features of this ocean-based CDR solution is its ability to maintain the same pH level in the output and input water, avoiding pH fluctuations that could damage marine ecosystems.
The agreement with Isometric brings Limenet closer to its launch on the carbon market, which will allow the company to offer verified high-quality credits to carbon removal buyers and investors.
