Carbon capture and utilization specialist LanzaTech (NASDAQ: LNZA) and sustainable fuels technology company LanzaJet have announced the launch of CirculAir, a transformative solution designed to convert waste, carbon, and renewable power into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

This initiative, offering a commercially viable and cost-effective alternative to traditional Fischer-Tropsch technology, aims to significantly advance the aviation industry’s decarbonization efforts globally, according to a statement, published last week on LanzaJet’s website.

CirculAir utilizes gas fermentation-to-ethanol and alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) technology, leveraging an ASTM-approved SAF production pathway.

This innovative process is set to produce e-fuels, power-to-liquids, and waste-to-fuels, reducing aviation emissions by at least 85%, and potentially achieving carbon-negative results, depending on the feedstock.

CirculAir is designed to transform diverse waste sources—including municipal solid waste, agricultural residues, industrial carbon emissions, carbon dioxide (CO2) from direct air capture (DAC), and renewable power—into SAF.

By merging LanzaTech’s pioneering gas fermentation technology with LanzaJet’s ATJ process, CirculAir enables the efficient conversion of waste into CarbonSmart ethanol, which is then refined into drop-in SAF and renewable diesel.

This integration not only enhances the scalability of SAF production but also supports the aviation sector’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, according to LanzaJet.

CirculAir brings to market a groundbreaking pathway to convert global carbon and waste inventories, alongside emerging renewable power sources and CO2 from DAC, into economically viable SAF, said Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet.

The global collaboration between LanzaTech and LanzaJet, already active across five continents, is pioneering the creation of domestic SAF supplies by transforming waste and recycled carbon, he added.

Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech and Board Chair of LanzaJet, emphasized the scale of the opportunity: “Over 100 billion gallons of fossil fuel-derived jet fuel are consumed each year – with our joint technology, we can turn that into 100 billion gallons of reliable jet fuel powered by recycled carbon.”

LanzaJet and LanzaTech, with a history of joint ventures, currently manage projects in Australia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.
