Two international developers of nature-based climate solutions have joined forces on a large reforestation project in South Australia, marking their first collaboration under the country’s Australian Carbon Credit Unit program.

Global restoration company Land Life and Carbon2Nature Australia (C2N), the local arm of Iberdrola Group’s nature restoration business, have begun work on a 688-hectare (1,700-acre) project at Talia Station on the Eyre Peninsula.

The initiative aims to restore native Drooping Sheoak grassy woodland, one of the region’s most endangered ecosystems, and generate high-integrity Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) under the federal Emissions Reduction Fund.

The effort reflects a broader shift in Australia’s climate and biodiversity agenda. With a new 2035 emissions reduction target and rising investor confidence in the ACCU scheme and emerging Nature Repair Market, international developers are increasingly looking to the country as a hub for nature-based carbon removal.

The Talia site, positioned next to Kulliparu National Park, sits within a broader ecological corridor stretching from the Gawler Ranges to the west coast.

The region has lost roughly 95% of its native Sheoak woodlands, placing species reliant on this vegetation at heightened risk.

The restoration program is designed to rebuild ecological resilience, support threatened species and contribute long-term carbon sequestration.

The project is expected to generate about 114,000 ACCUs over its crediting period, with substantially greater lifetime carbon removal due to its 100-year duration.

The work also carries cultural significance. Land Life and local partner Cassinia Environmental have collaborated with the Wirangu and Nauo Aboriginal Corporation to incorporate Traditional Owner priorities into the project’s design and management, including cultural burning practices supported by the Firesticks Alliance.

Tracey Russell, General Manager of Carbon2Nature Australia, said the company applied “stringent due diligence” before moving ahead, noting that the partners are establishing a biodiversity baseline using the Accounting for Nature framework.

According to Land Life’s APAC Regional Director, Tim Ferraro, the initiative demonstrates a model for “real, lasting restoration” as Australia builds its Nature Repair Market.

The site will also be protected permanently through an in-perpetuity Heritage Agreement.
