Kruger Inc has committed $23.75 million to a carbon capture project aimed at capturing and reusing carbon emissions at its Wayagamack Mill in Trois-Rivières.

This initiative, supported by Canadian and Quebec governments, seeks to reduce the mill’s carbon footprint.

The project, a collaboration with Mantel Capture Inc., a North American startup founded by MIT engineers and scientists, will involve testing carbon capture technology in an industrial setting for the first time.

The technology, which utilizes molten borate salt, can withstand high temperatures, enabling direct integration into the mill’s steam boiler.

Preparations for the two-year test phase are set to begin this month, with the full-scale operation anticipated to start in fall 2025.

If successful, Kruger plans to implement the technology across its entire mill operation, potentially leading to carbon neutrality.

Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Canada, stated: “Through our Investment in Forest Industry Transformation program, we are continuing to support Québec’s forest sector to implement innovative technologies that increase efficiency and capacity, lower emissions and create good, sustainable jobs.”

“Today’s investment is an excellent example of how we can continue to reduce emissions while helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of Canada’s forestry sector.”
