KenGen Appointed To Lead Development Of Kenya’s Carbon Market Framework - Carbon Herald

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has been selected to join the Multi-Sectoral Technical Committee (MSTC), tasked with spearheading the development of Kenya’s carbon market framework.

The three-year appointment, effective November 22, 2024, was confirmed by Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale through a gazette notice, KenGen said early this week.

The MSTC, a multidisciplinary body comprising representatives from key government ministries, counties, and agencies, will provide technical guidance to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) on assessing carbon projects.

This effort, establishing a framework to oversee carbon projects and integrate Kenya into global carbon markets, aligns with the Climate Change Act of 2013 and the newly enacted Climate Change (Carbon Markets) Regulations of 2024.

KenGen has already demonstrated expertise in this field, having generated 6.9 million carbon credits through six Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.

These include the Olkaria II Geothermal Expansion, Redevelopment of Tana Hydro Power Station, and the Ngong Wind Project, all registered under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

KenGen’s Managing Director, Peter Njenga, expressed pride in the appointment, highlighting the company’s leadership in renewable energy and carbon credit initiatives.

“We are honored to join this climate-positive committee, which will play a key role in advancing the climate agenda not just in Kenya but across Africa,” he said, adding that KenGen’s experience uniquely positions it to shape a robust carbon market framework that supports Kenya’s climate ambitions.

This initiative is expected to monetize Kenya’s climate actions by generating revenue through carbon credit sales while bolstering the country’s climate resilience and promoting low-carbon development.

The framework represents a significant step forward in aligning Kenya’s environmental goals with global sustainability efforts.
