This week, Isometric issued the first verified carbon removal credits for Pacific Biochar under the Biochar Production and Storage Protocol.

As shared in the announcement, the 3,042 credits came from the Humboldt Sawmill project in Scotia, California.

Commenting on this update, Josiah Hunt, CEO of Pacific Biochar, stated:

“We’re excited to be issuing our first credits with Isometric. Over the past months, two things have stood out: their exceptionally talented, well‑organized team and the scientific rigor they apply at every step.”

California-based Pacific Biochar partners with new and existing bioenergy plants, retrofitting current infrastructure and optimizing new ones to produce biochar.

The resulting biochar product is mainly applied to agricultural land near the production site, where it helps improve water conservation, crop yields, and fertilizer efficiency.

The newly issued verified credits were generated at the Humboldt Sawmill site, which uses sustainable sawmill residues as feedstock for biochar production.

The announcement clarifies that the sawmill waste for this site was sourced in line with California state and national regulations for forest management and timber harvesting and Isometric’s Biomass Feedstock Accounting (BFA) Module.

Besides representing the company’s first certified credits under Isometric’s Biochar Production and Storage Protocol, this batch of credits is also the first one issued under v1.3 of Isometric’s BFA Module, which approved a much wider range of biomass feedstocks as eligible for use under Isometric protocols.

The measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) details for the issuance were managed through Isometric’s Certify platform, combined with automated data submission enabled through the digital MRV platform developed by Mangrove Systems.

Additionally, the Humboldt Sawmill biochar project was independently validated and verified by 350Solutions, while the data and calculations behind each issued credit are publicly available on the Isometric Registry.

This year, biochar carbon removal emerged as the dominant pathway in carbon credit sales. Amid this booming market demand and interest, Isometric’s issuance of the first Pacific Biochar credits marks an important advancement towards the scaling of scientifically rigorous biochar CO2 removal.
