Ireland's NEG8 Carbon Advances DAC Technology With Breakthrough Innovations - Carbon Herald

NEG8 Carbon, a leader in carbon capture technology based in Waterford, Ireland, has announced significant upgrades to its direct air capture (DAC) system, enhancing both efficiency and effectiveness.

The DAC system operates by drawing in large volumes of air and passing it over advanced sorbent materials that capture CO2 from the atmosphere.

This captured CO2 can then be safely stored underground or converted into climate-neutral products like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

A major barrier to the widespread adoption of DAC technology is the cost per ton of CO2 captured.

NEG8 Carbon’s latest innovations significantly reduce this cost, making the technology more accessible.

The company has revolutionized the deployment of sorbents, reducing the required amount by 80%.

This change not only accelerates CO2 capture and release but also cuts regeneration time by 90%, leading to a much more efficient system.

Additionally, a key innovation in the heat exchange process optimizes heat transfer to the sorbent material, improving its regeneration efficiency and increasing CO2 uptake by 50%.

These advancements also reduce the system’s energy consumption by over 20%, making it more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Dr. John Breen, CTO of NEG8 Carbon, emphasized that these upgrades enhance both the efficiency and sustainability of their DAC technology, reinforcing the company’s commitment to combating climate change.

Looking ahead, the Irish company plans to integrate these innovations into their demonstration unit by the third quarter of 2024, with full-scale deployment by 2026.

NEG8 Carbon aims to capture 100 million tons of CO2 annually by 2050, positioning itself to meet the growing demand for scalable carbon removal solutions as the world intensifies efforts to achieve net-zero emissions.
