Iowa landowners gathered outside the State Capitol on Tuesday to protest the use of eminent domain for carbon capture pipeline projects.
The group is urging lawmakers to pass a bill that would prevent the practice from being applied to such developments.
Organizers said they plan to meet with State Senator Mike Klimesh to push for the legislation’s approval. Those in attendance stressed that the issue could play a significant role in upcoming elections.
“We are making eminent domain an election issue,” one attendee told KCCI News.
They added that officials who support its use for carbon pipelines could face political consequences at the ballot box.
The proposed bill is currently listed as unfinished business, meaning it could be revisited in the next legislative session if it does not pass this year.
