ION Clean Energy Launches ICE Blocks™ Modular Carbon Capture

ION Clean Energy Launches ICE Blocks™ Modular Carbon Capture - Carbon Herald

ION Clean Energy (ION) has introduced ICE Blocks, a new line of modular carbon capture units designed to make smaller-scale post-combustion capture both cost-effective and widely deployable.

The offering expands ION’s portfolio beyond its large-scale systems to address natural gas and other hard-to-abate flue gas emissions at distributed sites.

Each ICE Blocks™ unit is self-contained, incorporating the full carbon capture island, CO2 compression and dehydration, ducting, and solvent tanks. Optional modules provide additional balance-of-plant support, depending on customer needs.

“Leveraging the high performance of our ICE-31™ solvent, we have created a truly innovative, modular capture solution that is available today,” said Tim Vail, CEO of ION.

“The ICE Blocks™ provide a proven, cost-effective, holistic solution package for those smaller scale point sources that can be deployed quickly and safely to anywhere that has road access.”

Modular Partnership for Scalable Deployment

ION partnered with global engineering firm Modular Plant Solutions (MPS) to design the new units. Available in multiple sizes, ICE Blocks can be transported by truck, rail, or container ship, making them suitable for a wide range of facilities.

Russell Hillenburg, CEO of MPS, emphasized that the modular design approach enables rapid production and global deployment. “Our modularization design will make it possible for ION’s ICE Blocks frames to be shipped by truck, rail or containerized cargo ship, so they can get their technology to more plants in more places,” he said.

With ICE Blocks, ION aims to accelerate adoption of carbon capture across sectors, offering a ready-to-deploy solution that broadens access beyond major industrial hubs.
