Introducing Carbon Commerce By Shopify - A New CO2 Credits Marketplace - Carbon Herald

Leading digital commerce infrastructure provider Shopify has launched Carbon Commerce, a new platform tailored specifically for the online sale and purchase of carbon credits.

As experts in streamlined online sales of goods, Shopify is leveraging their knowledge and technological assets to help carbon credit suppliers sell their products with as much ease as any other online merchant in their system.

By eliminating the burdensome process in which carbon credit providers have to undergo a series of complicated steps before they are able to sell to end buyers, Carbon Commerce has the potential to catalyze growth in carbon credit transactions.

With its intricate digital infrastructure, the Carbon Commerce platform offers sellers a one-stop solution for seamlessly accessing a vast network of potential buyers.

The platform is already attracting big names from the carbon industry, and its first sellers now active online include Heirloom, Graphyte, and Grassroots Carbon.

As pointed out by Shopify, Carbon Commerce boosts a reliable inventory management system that enables merchants to perform spot purchases, set pre-purchase agreements, and long-term offtakes. This system also calculates evolving inventory projections.

Its elaborate digital ecosystem provides data management services with Alcove and registry integration with Isometric, and it enables access to the innovative New Frontier Markets marketplace, a Shopify-powered product that can generate demand.

Carbon Commerce allows credit providers to offer their products for sale to both businesses and consumers. Once they have established a client base, sellers can integrate a customer relationship management (CRM) system as well as an enterprise resource planning (ERP) tool through the Shopify platform.

David Vranicar, Lead of Sustainability Operations at Shopify, commented: “Shopify enables merchants of all kinds to scale. With Carbon Commerce, we are using Shopify’s leading commerce infrastructure to bring simplicity and reliability to the sale of carbon credits.”

“Carbon Commerce will fuel everything from long-term corporate offtakes to monthly subscriptions, allowing credit suppliers to tackle carbon while we take care of the commerce.”

The launch of Carbon Commerce is consistent with Shopify’s efforts to contribute to global climate action. In 2019, the company introduced its Sustainability Fund, investing more than $70M in carbon removal to date.

A founding member of the carbon removal buyer coalition Frontier, Shopify recently also made investment offers to rising carbon removal companies selected for the Kiloton Fund.
