INEOS and Royal Wagenborg have signed a significant agreement to facilitate the transportation of CO2 for Project Greensand.
This multi-year partnership is a crucial step towards establishing a robust CO2 capture, transport, and storage (CCS) value chain within the European Union (EU).
Project Greensand, a pioneering initiative led by INEOS, Harbour Energy, and Nordsøfonden, has already achieved a global first by successfully demonstrating the safe, cross-border transport and injection of CO2 into a depleted North Sea oil field.
This historic milestone, authorized by HM King Frederik of Denmark in March 2023, marks a significant advancement in sustainable carbon management.
The newly signed agreement with Royal Wagenborg will involve the deployment of a dedicated CO2 carrier, purpose-built to meet the highest safety and efficiency standards.
This vessel will play a vital role in transporting large volumes of CO2 to the Greensand storage site in the Danish North Sea.

Mads Weng Gade, Head of INEOS Energy DK, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “INEOS has been in the leading edge of demonstrating safe and efficient storage in the pilot phase of Project Greensand, and we have the ambition to establish the first CO2 storage within the EU in Greensand by 2026.”
“The lack of dedicated CO₂ carriers has been a bottleneck for advancing CCS projects within Europe,” said David Bucknall, CEO of INEOS Energy.
“The collaboration between INEOS and Royal Wagenborg serves as a breakthrough moment for the EU’s climate goals, offering a viable solution for large-scale CO2 transport. The agreement highlights the commitment of INEOS, Royal Wagenborg, and the governments of the Netherlands and Denmark to achieving a sustainable and low-carbon future.”
