India has launched a carbon market portal as part of its effort to operationalize a national emissions trading system, with formal trading in carbon certificates expected to begin within four months, Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal said Saturday, as reported by local media.

The portal is designed to serve as a central platform for entities seeking to participate in the emerging market, where companies will be able to buy and sell carbon credits to meet emissions targets.

The move, announced at the International Conference on Carbon Markets, Prakriti 2026, held over the weekend in New Delhi, marks a key step in establishing a structured, market-based mechanism to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) output.

Minister Manohar Lal indicated that organizations intending to participate in the system will be required to register through the portal before engaging in trading activity.

The framework is intended to create a regulated environment in which emissions reductions can be incentivized through financial transactions tied to carbon performance.

Under the planned system, companies that generate surplus carbon credits by reducing emissions beyond required levels will be able to sell them, while those falling short of compliance targets can purchase credits to meet their obligations. This approach is aimed at balancing environmental goals with economic flexibility.

The initiative forms part of India’s broader strategy to reduce emissions and build a domestic carbon market aligned with long-term climate objectives. By introducing a trading mechanism, policymakers are seeking to encourage efficiency improvements and investment in cleaner technologies across industries.

The rollout of the portal signals a transition from policy design to implementation, as the government works to establish the infrastructure needed for one of the country’s most significant climate-related market reforms.

With trading expected to begin in the coming months, the system is poised to become a central component of India’s approach to managing industrial emissions and supporting its transition toward lower-carbon growth.
