India-based climate infrastructure company Equilibrium has signed a multi-year agreement with Altitude for 180,000 tonnes of biochar carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

This deal fortifies India’s visibility on the global map of high-potential biochar geographies, and it represents one of the largest long-term biochar offtake agreements to emerge from the country.

For CO2 removal financier Altitude, the partnership demonstrates a strong commitment to scaling CDR infrastructure through smart capital and supporting best-in-class developers. Under the agreement, Altitude is backing this delivery as part of its mission of supporting high-quality projects on a global level.

Equilibrium, on the other hand, will leverage this agreement to accelerate infrastructure deployment as it scales what it believes could become one of India’s largest biochar carbon removal platforms.

As part of this vision, the company is already working on a broader multi-site expansion strategy across key agricultural regions in India.

India is uniquely positioned as a suitable biochar scaling hub due to the enormous volumes of agricultural residue it produces on an annual basis. At the same time, its agriculture sector is experiencing challenges created by the declining soil organic carbon (SOC), deteriorating soil health, and rising input dependency.

Equilibrium tackles the issue of excessive agricultural waste by using this material to produce stable biochar that locks CO2 emissions away from the atmosphere and boosts soil health and productivity. Currently, the company operates two biochar facilities in India and is working on expanding its infrastructure across multiple regions.

Over the past year, Equilibrium has conducted one of the world’s largest enriched biochar application programs in multiple agro-climatic zones, crop systems, and soil conditions in India.

According to the company, this effort demonstrated measurable improvements in yield performance, soil health, and nutrient efficiency at commercially viable application rates, and it also catalyzed increasing farmer-led biochar adoption across Equilibrium’s network.

Equilibrium founder Siddhanth Jayaram commented, “Biochar sits at the intersection of waste-to-value infrastructure, carbon removal, soil restoration, and industrial decarbonisation. We believe its long-term relevance extends far beyond carbon markets alone.”
