Japanese energy firm Idemitsu Kosan is betting on the future of carbon removal with a new investment in Systemic Ventures I SCSp, a venture capital fund operated by Switzerland’s Carbon Removal Partners (CRP). The fund backs early-stage startups working on cutting-edge carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions, from direct air capture to nature-based methods.
The move, made through Idemitsu’s U.S.-based subsidiary, Idemitsu Americas Holdings Corporation, underscores the company’s push to align with global decarbonization trends.
The partnership with CRP grants Idemitsu a front-row seat to emerging technologies and business models in the carbon removal ecosystem. It also provides insight into evolving carbon credit systems and infrastructure, helping the firm prepare for future implementation at scale.
“We believe that proactive investment in carbon removal solutions is essential for realizing a sustainable future. Our partnership with CRP will allow us to lead in the deployment of innovative technologies while supporting the necessary evolution of global carbon markets,” said a spokesperson from Idemitsu.
Japan has emerged as a key advocate for carbon removal, integrating CDR into its long-term emissions strategy and funding early pilots. In early March this year Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and the Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) signed an MoU to jointly explore a potential carbon removal initiative, focused on feasibility and economic research in Africa, Southeast Asia.
