The International Biochar Initiative (IBI), together with HAMERKOP Climate Impacts, has released an updated edition of the Biochar Manual for Carbon Removal, building on the original version released back in 2024.

Created as a practical and accessible guide, this material is intended to help biochar producers, project developers, buyers, researchers, and practitioners navigate the complex carbon dioxide removal (CDR) ecosystem and gain better knowledge on the pathways to certification.

As IBI and HAMERKOP highlight, its purpose is to ease the entrance into the CDR space for more people by creating easy access to clear and science-based information.

The comprehensive digital tool offers a synthesized overview of the various methodologies established so far by the leading certification standards on the market.

In its attempt to assist developers and investors in selecting the most suitable approach for their biochar projects, the manual goes over the methodologies, offering practical insights and comparisons.

The updated version comes with three key improvements.

One of these improvements is a wider and upgraded section on monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), permanence, and other crucial factors around biochar CDR projects.

The guide provides step-by-step help with the methodology selection process, sharing updated pricing information for each biochar certification standard.

Lastly, this refreshed edition also includes Isometric’s biochar methodology, adding it to the overall landscape of available guidelines.

With this resource, the IBI and HAMERKOP are confident they are providing a solid foundation for the biochar industry and adjacent sectors, stimulating capacity building for biochar CDR.

In 2025, biochar CO2 removal experienced unprecedented growth, with 1.6 million tonnes of credits contracted just in the first six months of the year, CDR.fyi shared.

Amid this rising demand, the updated manual published by IBI and HAMERKOP provides valuable guidance and a solid starting point for stakeholders looking to venture into biochar CDR.

Luisa Marín, executive director of IBI, stated, “For biochar to realize its full potential in carbon removal, producers and project developers need more than enthusiasm; they need consistency, credibility, and clarity. This manual is designed to meet that need, providing the technical foundation to scale verifiable projects around the world.”
