Greenplinth Africa has announced plans to distribute six million free clean cookstoves in Lagos as part of a pilot initiative under the larger 80 million clean cookstoves program, as reported by local media.
The program, which will be expanded across Nigeria, aims to tackle environmental and health challenges linked to traditional cooking methods.
At the opening ceremony on Tuesday, Dr. Olawale Akinwumi, President and CEO of Greenplinth Africa, emphasized the significance of this cookstoves initiative, describing it as “a historic game-changing project that will place Nigeria at the forefront of the compliance carbon markets under UNFCCC’s Article 6.4ER framework.”
He further outlined the program’s broader goals, including the deployment of 80 million highly efficient cookstoves across Nigeria, generating at least 1.2 billion tons of compliance carbon offset, and creating over 3.5 million green jobs.
According to Akinwumi, this pioneering initiative is expected to drive significant investment in low-carbon development while improving the health and livelihoods of millions, particularly women and children.
To ensure rigorous measurement, reporting, and verification, Greenplinth Africa is partnering with Carbon AI of Canada and the Lagos State Government. Beyond Lagos, 19 other states have pledged support for the initiative.
This program marks the first in Nigeria in over a decade to receive endorsement from the Nigerian Climate Change Council, reinforcing its alignment with the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement.
At the ceremony, Lagos State Head of Service Bode Agoro highlighted another key milestone: “Lagos, in partnership with Greenplinth Africa and global collaborators, unveils Africa’s first Subnational Carbon Exchange—the second globally after California.”
He added that this platform would establish Lagos as a hub for compliance carbon markets, attracting climate capital and fostering a self-sustaining green economy.
