U.S.-based soil carbon removal project developer Grassroots Carbon has joined The Ecosystem Modeling and Data Consortium (EMDC) at Colorado State University, joining forces on advancing soil carbon modeling on a national scale.
Entering this collaboration as an industry partner, Grassroots Carbon brings insights from its experience developing large-scale, real-world projects into an academic ecosystem working on soil carbon modeling with an aim to improve land management, agricultural sustainability, and climate solutions.
Headquartered in Texas, Grassroots Carbon partners directly with ranchers, helping them with the implementation and scaling of regenerative grazing practices, which in turn help advance credible, science-backed soil carbon dioxide removal.
Currently, the company works with a network of ranchers, covering more than 2 million acres of land across 22 U.S. states. Through these efforts, to date, Grassroots Carbon has delivered over 1.9 million tons of verified carbon removals for leading corporate buyers.
By joining the EMDC, the company will share large-scale data from its operational model that includes millions of acres of U.S. grasslands assessed in research efforts that aim to better understand CO2 sequestration, ecosystem health, and land productivity.
“At Grassroots Carbon, we are generating meter-deep, field-verified soil carbon data across more than two million acres of working grazing lands,” said Grassroots CEO Brad Tipper.
“By partnering with the Ecosystem Modeling and Data Consortium, we are working alongside some of the leading scientists to strengthen the ecosystem models that underpin high-integrity soil carbon outcomes.”
On its end, the EMDC unites scientists, NGOs, and industry leaders on the mission of advancing cutting-edge modeling and data-driven soil carbon approaches.

By welcoming Grassroots Carbon, the EMDC intends to fortify its ability to integrate real-world project data and insights into the scientific foundations applied in soil carbon markets and nature-based climate solutions.
Dr. Corinne Walsh, Consortium Lead at the EMDC, commented, “Partnering with Grassroots Carbon offers a great opportunity to support the testing, refinement, and validation of models and data collection strategies to address the challenges of real-world application in diverse environments.”
“Grassroots Carbon has been highly engaged in supporting our community-focused efforts to improve data and modeling tools that could ultimately support a variety of approaches for deploying high-quality land-based climate solutions.”
