Grassroots Carbon has announced it has delivered 1.9 million tons of verified carbon removals through its regenerative ranching program, becoming the first US-based company to reach the milestone using soil carbon sequestration on working grasslands.
The Texas-headquartered company said more than 1.5 million tons of removals have already been retired by corporate buyers seeking to manage their emissions, positioning Grassroots Carbon as the largest carbon removal provider in the US.
Since 2022, the company has paid $40 million directly to ranching partners for sequestered carbon, alongside a further $10 million in advance payments to support participation without upfront costs.
Founded in 2021, Grassroots Carbon focuses on measuring, verifying and rewarding carbon stored in soils through regenerative land management practices. The company now operates across more than 2 million acres in 22 states, partnering with ranchers to improve soil health while generating carbon credits for voluntary markets.
Scaling soil carbon through working lands
Grassroots Carbon said its approach combines carbon sequestration with broader land and ecosystem benefits, including improved water retention, biodiversity and drought resilience. Participating ranches have reported water infiltration rates up to 30 times higher than degraded land, an indicator of improved soil function.
The milestone is underpinned by a measurement and verification framework based on one-metre soil core sampling, significantly deeper than conventional approaches.
The company said it now manages the largest privately collected soil carbon dataset in the US, with outcomes verified through third-party scientific processes and translated into high-integrity soil carbon credits.

Grasslands cover around 655 million acres across the US and are increasingly viewed as a significant opportunity for nature-based carbon removal. Grassroots Carbon said its long-term ambition is to scale regenerative ranching across this landscape, aligning climate outcomes with rancher livelihoods and rural economic resilience.
The company framed the milestone as evidence that carbon finance, when paired with rigorous science and land stewardship, can deliver measurable climate impact today while strengthening agricultural systems for the long terms.
