Google has announced two new agreements, one with Varaha and the other with Charm, purchasing 100,000 tons of biochar carbon removal from each company to be delivered by 2030.

The two long-term partnerships mark the largest biochar carbon removal deals to date.

With this purchase, the tech giant is expanding the portfolio of solutions it supports as part of its net-zero strategy and mission to aid global climate action.

Up until now, Google has invested in a range of other decarbonization technologies such as direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering, and forestry-based carbon removal.

The company is also pushing for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) advancement through the Frontier and Symbiosis initiatives, where it participates as a founding member along with other industry-leading names.

For Charm, this agreement marks the second collaboration with Google, following an earlier purchase deal made with the Frontier coalition. While the initial partnership centered around Charm’s bio-oil removals, this second carbon removal agreement is based on Charm Biochar.

To be able to meet net-zero goals, companies need to be thinking of removing residual emissions and taking timely action to signal CDR demand and stimulate the work of carbon removal developers.

In this regard, according to Charm, Google is demonstrating speed and ambition when it comes to achieving its Net Zero objectives.

India-based Varaha believes that this deal with Google sets the stage for more substantial cooperation in the long run.

In an interview with AgFunderNews, Varaha cofounder and CEO Madhur Jain shared, “As we start to deliver these credits, our assumption is that we will have much larger deals going on with Google as well.”

As part of this first agreement, Varaha will deliver the biochar carbon removal using biomass from the invasive plant species Prosopis Juliflora.

To track the progress of the project, the company will utilize its comprehensive remote sensing technology, while the generated carbon removal credits will be validated by Puro.Earth.
