Google has expanded its cooperation with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) company Mombak, purchasing 200,000 tons of new reforestation credits.
This move comes more than a year after the two companies announced their initial agreement, under which Google purchased 50,000 metric tons of nature-based carbon removal credits from Mombak to be delivered by 2030.
Mombak has also been selected as the first nature restoration project by the Symbiosis Coalition—an advance market commitment alliance launched last year by Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce with a collective commitment to contract up to 20 million tons of nature-based credits.
Reilly O’Hara, Program Manager, Carbon Removal Commercialization at Google, commented, “Mombak’s proven approach balances high-integrity reforestation—such as the use of native, biodiverse forests and strong durability safeguards—with industrial scale and operations. We’ll need both to ensure a large and lasting impact, and Mombak is well-positioned to do so across Brazil.”
As a developer of projects that tackle atmospheric CO2 emissions, Mombak specializes in large-scale reforestation and nature restoration projects, starting with locations in the Amazon rainforest.
The company’s approach combines science, technology, forestry, and community engagement to roll out initiatives that remove carbon and help create optimal habitats where a range of different plants and animals can thrive.
Through its expanded collaboration with Google, Mombak will be able to generate carbon credits by planting native, biodiverse forests in degraded parts of the Amazon territory.
To achieve these results, Mombak will target unproductive pasturelands, restoring them back to life with native tree species and assisted natural regeneration.

These efforts are expected to reverse the local biodiversity loss and improve watershed assets in this area, simultaneously creating employment opportunities and social impact for the communities on the ground.
As part of their shared work, Google and Mombak will also collaborate on quantifying the biodiversity benefits achieved through reforestation, potentially issuing findings that could reflect positively across the complete reforestation sector.
In this regard, the two companies will leverage Google DeepMind’s Perch AI model to enable conservationists to analyze bioacoustic data from diverse ecosystems.
