Carbon registry organization Gold Standard has launched a program for testing digital Measurement, Reporting and Verification (dMRV) solutions in a bid to digitize reporting from project developers.
“Digital technologies have the potential to transform the way climate and sustainable development impacts are measured and verified. This pilot is another step on our journey to bring digital efficiencies to Gold Standard to enhance the integrity of impact data and ensure that benefits are delivered faster and more effectively,” said Margaret Kim, CEO of Gold Standard.
The pilot program follows the launch of a Digital Sustainable Development Impact tool earlier this year, aimed at enhancing reporting and improving access to data. Project developers interested in taking part are encouraged to submit proposals and can find submission guidelines at the program’s page.
Details about the Gold Standard dMRV Pilot Program
This Gold Standard dMRV pilot will begin accepting application on November 1, 2024 and will run for two years. Its goal is to provide a real-world trial of how digital MRV can improve all aspects of carbon credits’ data.
Gold Standard offers an additional incentive for participating projects, who will have the opportunity to issue credits at a higher frequency through what the organization calls an “interim issuance track”. This mechanism is designed to create faster access to funding for developers.
Here are some additional details:
- The pilot will gather insights on the operational challenges and benefits of dMRV solutions, informing future guidelines and standards for their use within the GS4GG framework.
- The feasibility and application of proposed dMRV solutions will be assessed by a new expert working group made up of technical experts, sector specialists and dMRV professionals.
- Participating projects will receive support from Gold Standard to ensure compliance with GS4GG and MRV requirements, while those that do not meet the necessary standards may revert to traditional certification methods.
dMRV gaining traction
MRV has become one of the focal points for participants in the carbon markets, as well carbon removal and capture.
In the last several years Digital MRV has begun appearing on the radar more often across the full spectrum of carbon management approaches, be they nature or tech-based.
Carbon credit certification platform Isometric has quickly become one of the leaders in the area, unveiling its dMRV tool in August, 2024 while companies like Crystalchain and Mangrove Systems have also developed platforms and have been attracting project developers.
