Gold Standard and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) underpinning a new collaboration to promote decarbonisation by companies in Tokyo.
As part of this agreement, Gold Standard Verified Emission Reductions (GSVERs) will be integrated into a new carbon credit trading platform launched by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Supporting the Zero Emission Tokyo Strategy, this initiative will lower barriers—such as language accessibility—for Tokyo-based companies seeking high-integrity carbon credits issued by Gold Standard.
Both Gold Standard and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will collaborate on capacity-building efforts to advance corporate understanding of carbon credits and ambitious climate strategies. A program of seminars and workshops will take place to support Tokyo-based businesses in adopting robust sustainability practices.
Margaret Kim, CEO of Gold Standard said: “As the world’s largest city, Tokyo has a crucial role to play in global decarbonisation efforts. We are proud to support the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in its Zero Emission Tokyo Strategy by ensuring companies have access to credible carbon credits and the knowledge to implement impactful climate action.
“This is a journey that requires ambitious action and investment by the private sector, both within and outside of their value chains. If we are to address the climate crisis, this is a path that we need all cities to follow. I know that this commitment to integrity is one that we both share, and that this will be a guiding force for our partnership in the years ahead.”
The MoU was formally signed in a ceremony in Tokyo between Margaret Kim and the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike. Following the signing, Margaret Kim will deliver remarks on 12 March at a forum attended by Tokyo-based businesses, further emphasising the importance of this partnership in advancing the city’s sustainability agenda.
Gold Standard was established over twenty years ago, with a clear mission: to raise the bar for climate action, starting by ensuring all carbon credits represent the highest level of environmental integrity, and deliver positive impact for people and nature across the world.
