Ghana Green Guard: $25B Climate And Socio-Economic Initiative Launched - Carbon Herald

CarbonPura Africa has announced the Ghana Green Guard initiative, a $25 billion public-private climate and socio-economic agreement, to drive environmental restoration, clean water access, and community-based social programs across Ghana.

The project is expected to generate over 305 million high-quality carbon credits across nearly 30 million acres (12 million hectares), with a projected revenue of $10.4 billion over 25 years.

The Ghana Green Guard initiative is launched in partnership with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) of Ghana and the Private Sector Participation in Health (PSPH), with support from Australia’s Carbon Planet and Carbon Capital Corporation.

By leveraging carbon financing and biodiversity monetization, the initiative aims to address climate challenges while advancing Ghana’s sustainability goals.

Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, CEO of the EPA, highlighted the agreement as a major milestone, emphasizing its role in leveraging international carbon markets to promote sustainability and protect Ghana’s water resources.

The initiative supports Ghana’s socio-economic programs, focusing on empowering women, children, and vulnerable farming communities.

It aligns with all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as Ghana’s net-zero commitments, and immediate interventions include securing clean water sources and restoring ecosystems affected by illegal mining.

Dr. Fred Bedzrah, Vice President of Operations at CarbonPura Africa, described the agreement as a benchmark for environmental and socio-economic impact, positioning Ghana as a leader in sustainable carbon finance.

The initiative integrates investment-grade carbon credit generation with transparent governance and inclusive community engagement.

PSPH Executive Director Dr. Francis Adjei stressed that true sustainability involves restoring both the environment and community well-being.

In turn, Carbon Planet CEO Cath Thrupp praised Ghana’s leadership in decarbonization and job creation.

The Ghana Green Guard initiative showcases how carbon markets can drive sustainable development, environmental conservation, and long-term economic resilience, ensuring no one is left behind.
