Gevo, a pioneer in net-zero hydrocarbon fuels, has secured a significant boost for its Net-Zero 1 (NZ1) sustainable aviation fuel project in South Dakota from the US Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Programs Office (LPO), which has granted conditional commitment for a loan guarantee totaling $1.46 billion, excluding capitalized interest during construction.
The NZ1 facility, located in Lake Preston, South Dakota, is poised to become the world’s first large-scale net-zero-emissions alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) production facility.
Utilizing 100% U.S.-sourced feedstocks, it will produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), protein and animal feed products, and corn oil.
Gevo‘s innovative ATJ plant design is expected to deliver SAF with a net-zero carbon footprint, contributing to a more sustainable aviation industry.
The DOE’s conditional commitment is a major milestone for NZ1, signaling the project’s potential to create significant economic benefits and drive job growth in South Dakota.
It also reinforces the viability of Gevo’s ATJ technology as a leading solution for reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector. Gevo CEO Dr. Patrick Gruber expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to transform the aviation industry and attract further investments in SAF commercialization.

The company’s Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Lindsay Fitzgerald, emphasized the project’s economic impact on South Dakota, including job creation and support for the agricultural community.
A recent report by Charles River Associates (CRA) projected that NZ1 would generate substantial economic and climate benefits.
The plant is expected to create over 1,300 indirect jobs during construction and 100 permanent jobs at the facility itself. Additionally, it will support hundreds of local indirect jobs in agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation, contributing an annual economic impact of over $100 million.
The NZ1 project’s design and operating model are expected to serve as a template for future Gevo net-zero projects, accelerating the commercialization of SAF.

The company’s subsidiary, Verity Holdings, LLC, will track and verify the sustainability and carbon intensity of its products. The conditional commitment from the DOE is a significant step toward finalizing the project’s financing and securing additional equity investors.
Gevo’s proprietary ATJ technology and the project’s potential for high returns on equity investment are expected to attract further capital.
While the conditional commitment is a positive development, the project must still meet certain technical, legal, environmental, commercial, and financial conditions before the DOE can finalize the loan guarantee.
