Gevo has reached a major milestone in engineered carbon removal, announcing that its Gevo North Dakota (GND) plant has issued more than 500,000 carbon dioxide removal certificates (CORCs) since beginning carbon capture and storage operations in mid-2022.
The company says the GND facility is now the largest producer of engineered carbon removal credits in the United States and the only ethanol-based CCS project issuing Puro.earth-certified CORCs with thousand-year permanence.
The milestone highlights the growing role of industrial carbon capture paired with geological storage in supplying high-integrity removal credits to both voluntary and compliance carbon markets.
According to Gevo, its carbon management business has been structured to operate across multiple regulatory frameworks while maintaining strict controls to prevent double-counting.
Alex Clayton, Gevo’s Chief Carbon Officer, said the company’s approach demonstrates that engineered removals can be delivered at scale without compromising quality. He noted that reaching 500,000 CORCs shows CCS-based removal is transitioning from pilot-scale activity into reliable commercial deployment.
Raising the Bar for Engineered Carbon Removal
Industry partners have also welcomed the achievement. Puro.earth President Jan-Willem Bode described the milestone as a signal that high-volume, high-integrity carbon removals certified under robust third-party standards are now operational at scale.
Gevo’s North Dakota facility recently received an “A” rating from carbon credit ratings agency BeZero Carbon, further strengthening the project’s credibility in a market increasingly focused on permanence, monitoring and verification.
The company points to wider market data showing that while demand for carbon dioxide removal has grown rapidly, only a small fraction of purchased credits have been delivered to date, underscoring the importance of operational projects.
With engineered removals gaining traction among corporate buyers seeking long-term climate solutions, Gevo says its CCS-enabled ethanol platform positions the company to continue expanding supply as the market matures.
The milestone also reflects a broader shift toward infrastructure-backed carbon removal pathways capable of delivering durable climate impact at industrial scale.
