Gevo has delivered the first batch of carbon credits as part of its agreement with Biorecro North America LLC signed in September 2025.

This week, the renewable fuels company announced the production and delivery of certified carbon dioxide removal credits (CORCs) issued under the Puro.earth standard from Gevo’s ethanol production and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) site in North Dakota.

For Gevo, this milestone opens up a new stream of revenue through carbon removal credits, adding to its portfolio of existing services centered around ethanol, protein, vegetable oil, and tax credit sales.

Through its agreement with Biorecro, Gevo is expected to tap into approximately $26 million in revenues, successfully fortifying its market position as the only producer of CORCs from CCS associated with ethanol production.

The delivery of the credits comes two months after Gevo and Biorecro inked a sales agreement under which Gevo is expected to deliver CORCs during the following five years, with the possibility of expanding the agreement after that.

Launched in 2022, the Gevo North Dakota facility has been operating as one of the first BECCS and industrial-scale carbon removal projects globally.

With a strategic positioning in Richardton, ND, this site leverages suitable geological formations and an operational Class VI carbon capture and storage (CSS) well to safely store captured CO2 emissions underground, with an estimated storage capacity of up to 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Alex Clayton, chief business development officer at Gevo, shared that the company’s Class VI carbon-storage well has shown outstanding performance since its launch in June 2022, using up about 165,000 tons of storage per year and capturing more than 550,000 tons of CO2 so far.

He added, “Puro.earth has certified the well as a thousand-plus-year permanence well, the only certification of this type for ethanol production in the world. CORCs are an up-and-coming product in a growth market and provide valuable co-product revenue for our operations.”
