Massachusetts-based company GE Vernova is preparing to deploy a direct air capture (DAC) system at Deep Sky’s novel Deep Sky Alpha testing and optimization center in Alberta, Canada.
As announced by the two companies, GE Vernova’s DAC system at Deep Sky Alpha will be able to capture up to 1,500 tons of carbon per year once it becomes operational towards the end of 2026.
Officially launched in August 2025, the Deep Sky Alpha facility is a carbon removal innovation center that will deploy and test up to 10 DAC technologies from different developers under the same operating conditions, looking to identify optimizations that can unlock cost reduction for this technology.
The news of the planned deployment comes after GE Vernova commissioned a DAC test facility at their Advance Research Center in Niskayuna, New York, with an annual capture capacity of 10 tons of atmospheric CO2.
This test facility will serve to demonstrate the capabilities of both the sorbent materials used in the company’s DAC technology and the effectiveness of the system overall, confirming that the solution is reliable and paving the way for its future successful commercial-scale deployment.
GE Vernova’s system is based on a proprietary solid sorbent technology that has been developed and rigorously tested at the company’s Advanced Research Center.
According to Brian Moran, Executive Director of the DAC program at GE Vernova, the deployment of these systems at Deep Sky Alpha is a collaboration built on shared ambition and complementary strengths that has the potential to transform the future of carbon removal.
