US infrastructure developer Frontier Infrastructure Holdings has announced a series of milestones aimed at advancing its CO2-by-rail platform and strengthening carbon market access for ethanol producers and other industrial emitters.

The company said its CO2-by-rail system has successfully completed the preliminary assessment process with Puro.earth following what it described as a detailed scientific, technical, and financial review.

As a result, the project will now be listed as a Puro.earth facility, allowing it to be included in procurement materials shared with global corporate carbon removal buyers.

Frontier said the development places the company among a relatively small number of US-based BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) projects to reach this stage, particularly on a first submission.

The company is developing a model that combines carbon capture, rail-based CO2 transportation, underground storage, and carbon credit generation into a single integrated system.

“For ethanol producers and other industrial emitters, access to carbon markets depends on more than capture alone,” said Robby Rockey, President and Co-CEO of Frontier. “It requires a fully integrated chain from transportation and storage through crediting and sale.”

Rail-based carbon transport gains momentum

The announcement highlights growing interest in alternative CO2 transport infrastructure in the US, particularly as pipeline projects continue to face regulatory delays and local opposition in several states.

Frontier’s strategy centres on transporting captured carbon dioxide by rail rather than relying exclusively on dedicated pipeline networks.

The company also announced that environmental asset management firm Wild Assets has exercised an option under a previous agreement to forward-purchase carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits from the project over the next four years.

According to Frontier, the expanded agreement improves long-term revenue visibility for the project as development progresses.

“These milestones demonstrate the coordinated execution required to advance carbon management infrastructure from concept to commercialization,” said Steven Lowenthal, Co-CEO of Frontier.

The company, which is backed by investment firm Tailwater Capital, is focused on developing low-carbon infrastructure across the Mountain West and Texas.

The latest announcements reflect broader efforts within the carbon management sector to build integrated systems that connect carbon capture, transportation, storage, and carbon credit markets into commercially viable business models.
