ExxonMobil UK has formally requested authorization for its Solent CO2 Pipeline Project, which entails constructing a pipeline from its Fawley oil refinery near Southampton to a carbon storage location beneath the English Channel.
The company emphasizes that this project is vital for implementing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the Solent area, which would play a significant role in lowering carbon emissions from the industrial cluster in the region.
Michael Foley, ExxonMobil UK Low Carbon Solutions business lead, stated that the pipeline would capture millions of tonnes of CO2 each year and added that: “Many industries in the Solent are crucial yet difficult to decarbonize, including those at our Fawley Petrochemical Complex, which manufactures a wide array of essential products like fuels and rubber goods. This pipeline and CCS technology will not only bolster the regional economy and sustain high-skilled employment but also contribute to the government’s objective of reaching net zero by 2050.”
This is one of the first developments for carbon capture and storage in the English Channel, with the company being awarded four licences by the UK regulator the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA).
The company has scheduled a number of consultations to present and discuss the project with the public in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight from August 7th to September 5th:
