This week, AtmosClear announced that it has chosen ExxonMobil as the provider of CO2 transportation and storage services for its bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) site in Louisiana.
Planned to be positioned in the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, the AtmosClear BECCS facility will utilize biomass to create clean energy while capturing the CO2 emissions released in the process.
As part of this collaboration, ExxonMobil will use its carbon capture and storage system to annually handle and permanently store up to 680,000 metric tons of the biogenic CO2 captured at the BECCS facility, with the possibility of increasing this volume in the future.
To provide these services, ExxonMobil will rely on its infrastructure of existing pipelines, Class VI CO2 storage wells, and advanced monitoring systems to enable a secure and cost-effective process for transporting and storing the captured carbon.
AtmosClear is embarking on this BECCS project in Louisiana after striking a landmark agreement with tech giant Microsoft, under which the Port of Greater Baton Rouge facility is expected to generate 6.75 million metric tons of carbon removal over a period of 15 years.
Set to start with construction in 2026, this project is expected to come online in 2029.
Fidelis, the company behind AtmosClear, estimates that this BECCS project will attract more than $800 million in investments in Louisiana, introducing numerous employment and economic opportunities to the region.
In a statement, Fidelis co-founder and CEO Dan Shapiro conveyed the company’s excitement over the collaboration with ExxonMobil, sharing that it stood out as a clear match for the AtmosClear BECCS facility due to its extensive existing infrastructure, world-class safety culture, and proven operational excellence.

Shapiro added, “This agreement is a critical step toward delivering CDR credits to Microsoft under the Carbon Removal Unit Purchase Agreement we signed in March, one of the largest Carbon Dioxide Removal purchase agreements in history to date.”
“By leveraging ExxonMobil’s unmatched expertise and mature CCS systems, we can deliver high-integrity carbon removals with strong economic advantages through scalable, cost-efficient operations while ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability.”
