Exxon Mobil has announced plans to construct its first commercial power plant, fueled by natural gas, to directly supply electricity to data centers.

Exxon intends to equip the power plant with advanced carbon capture technology, aiming to capture and store over 90% of its carbon dioxide emissions. This ambitious endeavor aligns with the company’s growing focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives.

“We’re in a unique position to provide low-carbon power at large scale on a very competitive and accelerated timeline,” said Dan Ammann, president of Exxon Low Carbon Solutions, and soon to be president of the company’s Upstream business.

This foray into the power generation sector can be interpreted as a significant shift in its business strategy but CEO Darren Woods was quick to explain there is no change in the strategy of the company. “We’re not getting into the power-generation business per se. We’re offering that as a package opportunity to really decarbonize power,” he emphasized at a conference call earlier in the week.

Key features of the project:

  • Strategic Location: The power plant will be strategically located near Exxon’s existing network of carbon dioxide pipelines, facilitating efficient carbon capture and storage.
  • Significant Capacity: The planned 1.5-gigawatt power plant has the capacity to power up to 375,000 Texas homes during peak demand.
  • Focus on Data Centers: This project directly addresses the surging energy demands of the data center industry, driven by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence.

Exxon aims to commence operations within five years, offering a faster timeline compared to alternative low-carbon energy sources like nuclear or geothermal power. 

The company emphasized that this project will operate independently of the grid, enabling faster deployment and greater flexibility for data center operators.

The increasing reliance on natural gas for data center power raises concerns about potential emissions increases with the rapid growth of technologies like AI, which could cause a 20% jump in energy demand across the U.S. according to a Wells Fargo analysis.

And while Exxon’s carbon capture technology aims to mitigate these concerns, the long-term sustainability and economic viability of such projects remain crucial considerations and this particular project will be viewed as a real-world case study.

But the company seems confident in the technology and the demand for it. Natural gas is one of four industries where Exxon already has carbon capture projects lined up, with ammonia, hydrogen and steel partners lined up with indications that clients could be found in industries like paper, chemicals and cement.
