ExxonMobil has begun commercial operations of its first carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in partnership with ammonia producer CF Industries, marking a major milestone in the company’s expanding low-carbon infrastructure strategy along the US Gulf Coast.

The project, which entered service in 2025, will capture and permanently store up to 2 million tons of carbon dioxide annually from CF Industries’ Donaldsonville manufacturing complex in Louisiana.

The facility is one of the largest nitrogen fertilizer sites in the world and represents a significant source of industrial emissions in the region.

CCS has become a central pillar of decarbonization strategies for major energy producers, with companies including Chevron, Occidental Petroleum and Talos Energy also advancing large-scale projects across North America.

Exxon is positioning itself as a leading operator of CO2 transport and storage networks, leveraging its subsurface expertise and existing pipeline infrastructure.

Beyond the CF Industries partnership, Exxon has secured additional CO2 handling agreements in Louisiana with AtmosClear and Lake Charles Methanol II, covering a combined capture volume of up to 2 million tons per year from planned industrial facilities.

The company also expects to bring new CCS projects online later this year in collaboration with Linde and steelmaker Nucor.

Exxon’s broader carbon management portfolio extends across Texas and Louisiana, where the company is developing multiple storage hubs designed to serve heavy industry and power generation customers. Three additional CCS projects are currently targeted for start-up in 2026.

In parallel, Exxon is progressing plans for its first low-carbon data center, with a final investment decision expected by the end of 2026. Together, these initiatives underscore the company’s strategy to scale commercial CCS infrastructure while expanding into new low-emissions business segments.
