Bolivia-based carbon removal provider Exomad Green has struck the largest-ever biochar agreement with Microsoft for the removal of an impressive 1.24 million tonnes of CO2 over a period of 10 years.
This deal also stands out as one of the largest durable carbon removal agreements recorded across all the different technologies in the industry.
For Microsoft and Exomad Green, this is an extension of their previous collaborative relationship comprised of a series of transactions, the latest one being a purchase deal for 32,000 tonnes of biochar carbon removal credits, signed in December 2023.
Throughout their joint efforts, the two companies are also collaborating with digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (dMRV) provider Carbonfuture, who ensures the carbon credits generated from Exomad’s operations are transparent and aligned with the highest market standards.
This deal is fortified by a contractual agreement with Carbonfuture, who will provide its MRV+ system to ensure that every tonne of CO2 removed is tracked across its entire lifecycle, enabling third-party verification and certification under the Puro Standard.
Exomad Green’s carbon removal approach centers around transforming sustainable forestry residues that would conventionally be incinerated in firepits into a biochar material that keeps carbon dioxide stable and out of the atmosphere for hundreds of years.
The biochar product gets distributed to local farmers in Exomad Green’s areas of operation, contributing towards improved agricultural productivity, cleaner air, and a lowered risk of urban fires due to the reduced residue incineration.
Through this carbon removal deal with Microsoft, Exomad Green also intends to deliver co-benefits to a population of more than 250,000 people living in the regions of Riberalta, Concepcion, and nearby communities, which are home to the company’s biochar production facilities.

Under this agreement , Exomad will leverage several new features that redefine the structuring of large-scale carbon removal agreements across the industry.
One of these features is the implementation of a dedicated Forest Monitoring Center that will allow Exomad to trace the origin of all biomass, enabling traceability of operations.
Another key feature of this collaboration will be the regular quality testing that will guarantee that the biochar consistently aligns with international standards.
