Graphyte, a Pine Bluff–based developer of permanent carbon removal projects, has cleared a major hurdle in securing market confidence. The company announced that Frontier, a $1 billion advance market commitment created by Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, and McKinsey Sustainability, has completed its technical diligence review and will move ahead with a $250,000 prepurchase of carbon removal from Graphyte’s Arkansas facility.

The decision reflects Frontier’s approval of Graphyte’s “Carbon Casting” technology, a Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS) approach that stores carbon from waste biomass in long-lasting, engineered blocks.

The technology is part of a broader group which includes biochar, bio-energy with carbon capture (BECCS) and several others, accounting for 94% of sales and 96% of deliveries in the voluntary market for durable carbon removal credits according to CDR.fyi.

Frontier endorsement

“This milestone speaks to the technical rigor of our Carbon Casting process,” said CEO Barclay Rogers. He added that the agreement demonstrates Frontier’s view that the company can deliver “high-quality, verifiable carbon removal tons in the near-term.”

The deal represents a transition from an earlier research and development grant awarded by Frontier through Kodama in 2022.

After Graphyte acquired the carbon removal portion of that business, Frontier revised the grant and has now agreed to prepurchase 450 durable tons based on the updated technology milestones.

Graphyte also shared they plan on releasing a Measurement, Reporting, and Verification white paper detailing operational data, performance metrics, and key methodologies used in the diligence process, a move aimed at increasing transparency and industry learning.

Graphyte on track to scale

The company has been on a steady progression track in the last several years. It received the world’s first CCP-labeled carbon credits under the Subsurface Biomass Carbon Removal & Storage protocol, marking a global milestone for high-integrity, science-aligned carbon removal with durable, efficient, scalable, and cost-effective impact.

Back in November 2023 American Airlines became its first customer by purchasing 10,000 tons of permanent carbon removal, signaling the potential of the company.

This was followed by a $30 million Series A funding round led by Prelude Ventures and Carbon Direct Capital in August 2024 and with the Frontier contract secured, Graphyte now says it is ready to scale. “We are in the process of increasing our capacity by 3X at our operating facility in Arkansas and are preparing to build an additional facility in 2026,” Rogers said. He also pointed to rising market traction for durable removals, noting that “sales of durable carbon removal credits are up by 300% year-on-year.”
