Evero, a company specializing in low-carbon energy generation from wood waste, has been selected by the government of the UK to deliver the nation’s first bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) facility.

The company has announced that it will partake in negotiations with the UK government to retrofit the existing bioenergy capacity at the Evero Ince biomass plant with proven carbon capture technology developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Positioned in the village of Ince, the BECCS facility will leverage its strategic location to connect to the HyNet Cluster infrastructure, which will safely transport and store the captured CO2 emissions.

The project, called InBECCS, is one of two prioritized initiatives on the Department for Energy Security and Net-Zero’s Project Negotiation List.

Slated to become operational by 2029, InBECCS is expected to be able to remove 217,000 tonnes of atmospheric CO2 on an annual basis by processing 170,000 tonnes of domestic waste wood, like old kitchens and wood manufacturing residue diverted from landfills.

At the same time, the facility will generate a volume of clean energy large enough to power more than 100,000 homes and businesses each year across the Evero portfolio.

By retrofitting the Ince biomass plant with a CO2 capture system, Evero is also projected to introduce a number of high-value, skilled jobs in the carbon capture and clean energy domain, while also fortifying the UK’s leading role in green innovation.

Evero CEO Elliot Renton commented that this project marks the next step in the company’s strategy for delivering BECCS-based greenhouse gas removals from multiple waste wood sites across the UK.

He added, “We’re proud to pioneer this new model—one that supports clean energy, removes CO2 from the atmosphere, and opens the door to wider collaboration beyond our existing portfolio. It’s a foundational move to scale BECCS and help realize the UK’s net-zero ambitions.”
