This week, the Enhanced Weathering (EW) Alliance, convened by the Carbon Business Council, announced plans of increasing coalition activities in an effort to scale enhanced weathering as a critical carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathway.
Building on a foundation provided by the Enhanced Weathering Alliance (EWA), established in 2024, the coalition brings together leading companies and organizations from the EW space.
Its current members include Alt Carbon, Carbonfuture, Carbon Drawdown Initiative, Carbony, Eion, Flux, InPlanet, Mati, The Rock Flour Company, Silica, Terradot, UNDO, and ZeroEx, as well as observers from nonprofit Cascade Climate.
Together, these stakeholders will leverage the growing momentum in EW to further grow this field to climate-relevant levels.
Ben Rubin, executive director of the Carbon Business Council and publisher of the Carbon Herald, highlighted that EW has the potential to deliver major climate benefits and create real value for farmers.
He stated, “By supporting a dedicated coalition on this important carbon removal pathway, we’re ensuring enhanced weathering grows with scientific integrity, transparency, and strong engagement across the field.”
Enhanced weathering refers to the process of spreading finely ground minerals on land to accelerate a naturally occurring process that removes atmospheric CO2 emissions.
This CDR pathway can leverage existing agricultural infrastructure and practices, offering a rapidly scaling approach for tackling climate change, while also delivering potential co-benefits for soil, oceans, and waterways and improving crop yields and food supply stability along the way.

The EWA recently unveiled a policy brief during the European Commission’s Enhanced Weathering workshop on the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF), at a time when EW is also attracting landmark agreements with big names like Barclays and Microsoft.
Acknowledging these positive signals, the EWA will now focus on policy engagement through resources like the CRCF-related policy brief while also working on building transparent markets, where buyers seeking high-quality CDR can reach verified EW credits via clear and credible pathways.
Additionally, the coalition will dedicate efforts to raising awareness of EW’s scientific foundation, looking to educate stakeholders on scalability, safety, and potential co-benefits for agriculture and the environment.

The Enhanced Weathering Alliance is part of a broader initiative by the Carbon Business Council centered around scaling CDR across land, air, rock, and water.
Each one of these four verticals fosters deeper individual pathway collaboration while reinforcing the sector’s collective strength as a unified CDR ecosystem.
