enfinium, a prominent operator in the UK’s waste-to-energy sector, has revealed the next stage of its carbon capture and storage (CCS) pilot initiative, taking a significant step forward in its plan to implement CCS across its facilities.

One key project, situated at enfinium‘s Parc Adfer facility in Flintshire, North Wales, will become the sole operational CCS pilot in Wales and the first within the broader HyNet industrial cluster.

In April 2025, enfinium plans to transfer the carbon capture pilot currently at its Ferrybridge-1 site in West Yorkshire to Parc Adfer.

The Parc Adfer site is a potential candidate for funding through the UK Government’s Track-1 HyNet Expansion program, which could accelerate both economic development and decarbonisation in North Wales, pending a favorable decision from the Government in the coming months.

A new pilot plant will then be set up at Ferrybridge by Nuada, a UK-based firm pioneering a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) technology. This innovative process captures CO2 from emissions sources using a vacuum swing mechanism, offering significant potential for improved efficiency when scaled up to commercial use.

Both pilot plants will operate for a minimum of six months and contribute to enfinium’s broader strategy of implementing CCS at all six of its UK facilities, supported by ongoing investments aimed at reaching net-zero emissions.

Recent research by the Climate Change Committee and the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies estimates that the waste-to-energy sector could contribute between 5 and 8 million tonnes of carbon removal annually by 2050.

Mike Maudsley, CEO of enfinium, said: “To achieve net zero, the UK needs to produce carbon removals at scale. Energy from waste will play a critical role in delivering the millions of tonnes of durable carbon removals that are necessary for the UK to achieve net zero.”

“By supporting the development of carbon capture technologies, we are advancing innovation in the UK while building our own understanding as we progress with our plans to deploy CCS across our six UK facilities.”
