UK-based energy-from-waste (EfW) company enfinium has partnered with German company Wasteer to bring innovative artificial intelligence (AI) to its operations in Yorkshire.

With this collaboration, the enfinium Ferrybridge 2 facility in Knottingley will receive a sophisticated AI-powered visual system that will optimize the tracking of waste material, improving the plant’s sorting accuracy and boosting the overall performance.

Developed by Wasteer, a company that specializes in intelligent waste sorting and management software development, the new system at the Ferrybridge 2 will use an AI-powered advanced camera technology to automatically analyze incoming waste and identify contaminants before they disrupt the operational process.

This system will provide enfinium with the opportunity to keep constant track of the stream, as it can generate real-time alerts. Taking the monitoring one step further, the system will also record data on the waste stream, providing logs that can be beneficial for process enhancement.

Current projections indicate that by improving the accuracy of waste analysis, increasing reliability, and maximizing uptime, this automation will enable enfinium to reduce the plant’s breaks by about 30%, cutting operating supplies by up to 8%, and increasing the operational rate by around 2%.

Led by the principle of applying sustainability and economic viability in the development of their software products, Wasteer created this technology utilizing a proprietary database, Large Language Models (LLMs), and AI.

For the German company, which has already deployed its technology to various leading European energy-from-waste businesses, this partnership will mark its debut on the UK market.

On behalf of enfinium, Chris Bebbington, Group Head of Asset Management, shared that this partnership with a leading European company like Wasteer demonstrates the company’s commitment to driving innovation and efficiency in the waste-to-energy sector in the UK.

He commented, “enfinium is always looking for innovations in technology that can optimize our plant efficiency. Wasteer’s AI technology, which allows real-time, automated analysis of incoming waste, will give us a wealth of data to base operational decisions on and enable early detection of impurities in the waste stream, preventing any issues before they arise.”
