UAE steel producer Emsteel has signed an agreement with Gulf Cryo to advance carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies across its operations.
The memorandum of understanding focuses on capturing CO2 emissions at source while also exploring downstream utilization, conversion and storage solutions.
According to the companies, the partnership aims to support industrial decarbonization and accelerate the development of low-carbon manufacturing ecosystems in the UAE.
Thus, the agreement marks another step in the region’s growing investment in carbon management technologies. “This is key to accelerating and derisking industrial decarbonization,” said Elie Adaimy, Group Head of Business Development and Innovation at Gulf Cryo.
UAE Expands Industrial Carbon Capture Efforts
The agreement was signed during the Make it in the Emirates event and follows the launch of Gulf Cryo’s first high-purity carbon capture facility in the UAE earlier this year.
The plant, developed in partnership with RAK Ceramics in Ras Al Khaimah, captures emissions and converts the CO2 into food-grade products. The facility is expected to capture around 17,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.
Emsteel has also recently advanced other low-carbon initiatives. Earlier this year, the company delivered what it described as the first batch of hydrogen-based steel rebar to Aldar Properties for use in construction projects.

The UAE plans to invest around $63 billion in renewable energy and related infrastructure by 2030, according to the Gulf Cooperation Council. Steel producers across the region are increasingly aligning decarbonization plans with these national targets.
Currently, one of the region’s largest carbon capture projects in the steel sector is being operated by Emsteel and Adnoc at the Al Reyadah facility. The site can capture up to 800,000 tons of CO2 per year for storage in oil fields.
The latest partnership highlights growing momentum behind CCU technologies across heavy industry in the Gulf region.
