Sustainable packaging and recycling company Empacar S.A. is partnering with Puro.earth, Cula, and Bioflux on biochar production in Bolivia.
Under the collaboration, Empacar will develop a biochar production facility in the Ascención de Guarayos region, leveraging know-how from its expert partners.
To produce biochar, the planned facility will utilize wood waste material from local sawmills regulated by the Autoridad de Fiscalización y Control Social de Bosques y Tierra (ABT)—the Bolivia government entity overseeing land use, including forests.
Once fully operational, the facility is expected to be able to capture approximately 70,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, with the first issuance of carbon removal credits expected in 2027.
Through this partnership, Empacar will align operations with Puro.earth’s leading crediting platform for engineered carbon dioxide removal, Cula’s digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) platform, guided by insights from biochar project consultant BioFlux.
This operational setup will enable Empacar to scale its biochar production rapidly, leveraging Puro.earth’s institutional-grade infrastructure built on scientific rigor, transparency, and integrity.
Its biochar projects will be certified under the Puro standard, and the generated biochar carbon removal credits will be issued into the Puro Registry after successfully passing all necessary audits and verification.
For Empacar, this milestone partnership comes after the company launched its new business unit called Carbon X at the Bolivia Carbon Forum. As presented by Empacar, CarbonX represents the group’s platform for climate innovation, transforming environmental challenges into climate assets and supporting the company’s transition into the global voluntary carbon market.

Empacar CEO Carlos Limpias called this initiative a new chapter for the company, adding, “Through CarbonX, we are transforming industrial biomass residues into permanent carbon removal while creating economic opportunities for rural communities.”

Both Cula and BioFlux expressed pride in this collaborative effort with Empacar, which has established itself as a regional leader in sustainable operations, with nearly five decades of recycling and circular economy experience.
Jan Willem Bode, President of Puro.earth, commented, “Scaling this industry requires more than technology—it requires trusted standards, transparent data and credible certification, and strong entrepreneurial companies willing to participate in this market. We’re thrilled to support Empacar in issuing high-integrity carbon removal credits and connecting with global buyers seeking verified climate impact.”
