In a move set to reshape the concrete industry, Finnish firms Carbonaide and Elematic have joined forces to roll out the first production-ready CO2-curing system for precast concrete on a global scale.

The collaboration aims to significantly cut emissions, reduce production costs, and boost efficiency in the building materials sector.

With cement prices having more than doubled over the past few years, this new approach offers both economic and environmental advantages.

By using captured carbon dioxide to cure precast concrete, the process not only strengthens the material but also permanently stores CO2 within the finished product—turning construction components into long-term carbon sinks.

Carbonaide’s patented system operates at atmospheric pressure and has been in commercial use in Finland since early 2024. The technology mineralizes CO2 into the concrete structure, reducing the need for traditional cement and slashing emissions by up to 50%.

When paired with industrial byproducts such as slag or alternative binders, the process can even produce concrete with a net-negative carbon footprint.

Initially integrated into Elematic’s advanced wall and circulation lines, the CO2-curing system enhances production speed and product consistency — two critical factors for infrastructure and commercial projects.

“Our collaboration with Elematic is a significant step toward realizing the potential of CO2 as a resource in the construction industry,” said Tapio Vehmas, CEO of Carbonaide.

“”The market demand for more environmentally friendly building solutions is huge. Elematic’s solutions are widely used in large-scale urban development projects where industrialized, precast construction is becoming a priority.”

The companies plan to scale the system globally through Elematic’s vast customer base in more than 100 countries, leveraging over six decades of precast manufacturing expertise. The partnership comes as cities around the world look for cleaner construction practices.
