Ecuador has entered a partnership with Gold Standard, officially recognizing the organization under its national Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Offsetting Scheme, known as Ecuador Carbono Cero – PECC, Gold Standard said in a media release on Monday.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on July 17 through Ecuador’s Ministry of Environment, Water, and Ecological Transition (MAATE), following an evaluation of Gold Standard’s alignment with the strict guidelines under the scheme.
Established in 2023, PECC supports Ecuador’s broader Zero Carbon Program by setting standards for carbon offsetting to meet national climate targets.
The two-year agreement sets out a collaborative roadmap between MAATE and Gold Standard to operationalize the scheme.
Their joint efforts will focus on identifying procedural gaps, developing certification protocols, and building capacity among local auditors.

Technical exchanges will also address market and non-market mechanisms, registry operations, and best practices in carbon certification.
Gold Standard’s CEO, Margaret Kim, welcomed the partnership, noting that it supports their mission to promote credible climate action and aligns with Ecuador’s commitment to a transparent carbon market.
In a separate announcement, MAATE highlighted that international collaboration plays a key role in strengthening Ecuador’s climate efforts.
This MoU marks a key step in Ecuador’s climate agenda, paving the way for increased credibility and effectiveness in its carbon market.
Gold Standard will now work closely with MAATE to implement the agreement and ensure international best practices shape the future of Ecuador’s climate strategy.
