Carbon asset manager and project developer Econetix has signed a million-dollar forward supply agreement with German energy major RWE (FWB: RWE), securing a commercial channel for carbon credits that will be used in the international aviation market under the CORSIA emissions scheme.

Under the agreement, announced on September 1, Vienna-based Econetix will provide CORSIA-eligible credits from its certified project portfolio to RWE Supply & Trading.

RWE will act as an intermediary, using its trading platform and customer network to connect the credits with airlines and other compliance-driven buyers.

The deal comes as airlines prepare for CORSIA’s first compliance deadline in January 2028, when airlines must cancel eligible carbon credits to offset growth in emissions above 85% of 2019 levels.

Credits must meet requirements including host country authorization under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and a corresponding adjustment to prevent double counting.

Supply Remains A Key Constraint For CORSIA

Econetix said demand for CORSIA-eligible credits is expected to reach hundreds of millions of tonnes, while only a small portion of the volume required by airlines has so far been authorized by host countries.

According to the company, forward agreements can give buyers earlier access to future supply while projects move through authorization and certification processes.

RWE’s carbon credit trading and origination chief Kirsten Lefter said the company wants to connect high-integrity supply with airlines preparing for CORSIA, stating its early commitment can help make future supply bankable.
