Vienna-based carbon asset manager Econetix has signed a multi-million dollar forward supply agreement with SmartestEnergy to provide CORSIA-eligible carbon credits for aviation and corporate buyers.

The agreement marks Econetix’s second major CORSIA supply deal in recent months as demand for aviation-related carbon credits continues to grow ahead of future compliance deadlines.

Under the deal, Econetix will supply carbon credits generated from certified projects in Africa, including improved cookstove and solar lamp initiatives in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Expanding CORSIA Credit Supply

SmartestEnergy, a subsidiary of Japan’s Marubeni Group, will distribute the credits to aviation and corporate customers using its global commodity trading network.

According to Econetix, the agreement further strengthens its position in the emerging market for CORSIA-compliant carbon credits. The company is currently developing more than ten projects across the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Sierra Leone.

These projects are advancing through Article 6 authorisation and CORSIA certification processes, which are becoming increasingly important as airlines prepare for stricter international carbon offsetting requirements.

Econetix said the aviation sector’s demand for CORSIA-eligible credits is expected to reach hundreds of millions of tonnes by 2035, increasing the importance of high-integrity supply and regulatory compliance.

The company specializes in managing the full CORSIA value chain, including project development, Article 6 approvals, corresponding adjustments and registry labelling.

“Signing with SmartestEnergy, backed by the Marubeni Group, confirms what we set out to build: a repeatable CORSIA supply operation at the level the aviation market demands,” said Jakob Zenz, CEO of Econetix.

SmartestEnergy said buyers are becoming more selective as the market matures and compliance deadlines approach.

“The CORSIA market is maturing fast, and buyers are becoming increasingly selective about the quality and integrity of supply,” said Vishnu Aggarwal, VP Global Environmental Markets at SmartestEnergy.
