Ebb Carbon performed a test at Port Angeles Harbor in Washington, aimed at ensuring all operations around its marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) project Macoma are safe for the environment and in line with rules and regulations.
The ambitious Macoma project is envisioned to capture atmospheric CO2 while contributing towards resolving the ocean acidity problems in the waters of Port Angeles Harbor.
During its slated two years of operation, this project is expected to remove up to 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere with the help of Ebb Carbon’s innovative electrochemical technology.
Last week, ahead of the 4th of July nationwide festivities, Ebb Carbon launched a test at Port Angeles Harbor in order to map out the water territory for the future mCDR project.
The test work included releasing EPA-approved Rhodamine WT dye over a 10-hour period that served to define the water current and mixing patterns under different tidal conditions in this location, providing valuable knowledge for the future steps of Macoma.
Developed by Ebb Carbon at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Sequim, Washington, Project Macoma was modeled following input from leading experts in biogeochemistry, ocean modeling, ocean acidification, and marine ecology.
Earlier this year, the project made history by receiving the first-ever National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, marking the precedent of an mCDR initiative being granted permission under the Clean Water Act’s NPDES framework.

In a broader perspective, through this project, Ebb Carbon intends to contribute to the environmental needs and climate priorities in the state of Washington, paying special attention to the issue of ocean acidification.
The recent test at Port Angeles Harbor helps pave the way forward for this initiative, and in the future, Ebb Carbon hopes to be able to scale its mCDR operations to larger climate-relevant levels.
