Matthew Eisaman, a prominent figure in the field of carbon capture and an associate professor at Yale University, passed away on February 28, 2025, after battling a prolonged illness, at the age of 46.
Eisaman had joined Yale in 2023, becoming part of a group of distinguished scientists invited to work with the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture (YCNCC).
This center focuses on groundbreaking research related to nature-based carbon sequestration and methods for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, all aimed at finding solutions to the pressing challenge of climate change.
In addition to his academic role, Matthew Eisaman was a co-founder of Ebb Carbon, a California-based startup that developed a technology designed to store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in seawater, simultaneously helping to mitigate ocean acidification.
Last year, Ebb Carbon was recognized as one of the finalists in the $100 million XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition, along with two other Yale-affiliated ventures.
Maureen Long, the chair of the Earth & Planetary Sciences department at Yale and the Bruce D. Alexander ’65 Professor, offered high praise for Eisaman, highlighting his impactful work as a scientist, his dedication as an educator, and his exceptional role as a colleague.
